11 August 2018: Bagua Zhang workshop with Shifu Liu

Catch this rare opportunity to learn the internal martial art of Bagua Zhang from Master Liu Quanjun.

Formulated in 1860 by Ding Haichuan in Beijing, Bagua Zhang’s movements employ the whole body with smooth coiling and uncoiling actions, utilizing hand techniques, dynamic footwork, and throws. Rapid-fire movements draw energy from the center of the abdomen. The circular stepping pattern also builds up centripetal force, allowing the practitioner to manoeuvre quickly around an opponent.

One of the three major internal martial art styles, Bagua Zhang uses Yi Jing theories. A key requirement is the  practice of circle walking, using the eight direction of the compass. During practice you continuously change direction without stopping to build skill and speed.

15 July: Camden New Town Festival Demonstration

Thanks to everyone who came to the demonstration for the Camden New Town Festival at St Paul’s. Shifu Liu led us through some Foundation training where everyone could join in, before doing the Chen Four-Direction fist and some Bagua and Xing Yi (alternative internal martial arts training for a workshop he wants to do in August). Lai and Piyush performed the 56 Competition routine, and we finished up with the Chen Sword form. They all gave great performances and it was very enjoyable despite the heat.
Thanks very much for coming along, and giving us your time and energy.

2 July: Shifu Liu meets Mr Chen Deliang

Shifu Liu presents Mr. Chen Deliang of the Chinese in Britain Forum with a cheque, monies raised from the TJC fundraiser earlier in 2018. It is for a memorial to celebrate the Chinese workers who supported the troops during World War One. Mr Deliang is the London Deputy Adjutant of the queen, Britain’s first Chinese mayor and a former mayor of Redbridge.

4 August 2018: Chen Eyebrow Staff Form workshop with Shifu Liu

The Eybrow Level Staff, qimeigun (齐眉棍) form has been revived after much research by Master Chen Ziqiang. it combines certain basic staff movements such as sweeping, blocking, holding and chopping together with distinctive footwork and body methods typical of Chen style.

Practitioners should pay attention to the combined use of the body and staff, also known as the Principle of Unity of Person and Staff. This the way that each movement is applied, making adjustments for weight, length, feel, and balance to allow the staff to follow the body naturally and to let the body follow the staff.

For more details about the creation of the form and Master Chen Ziqiang, see the Kung Fu magazine article:-

This is a unique opportunity to learn and refine the 56 Competition form with Shifu Liu. It was specially formulated as a four minute competition routine which combines elements from the traditional Chen Old Frame and Chen New Frame routines and combines them to demonstrate the skills, flow of movement and ‘fajin’ energy releases, which are typical of Chen style Taijiquan.
